Coney Island’s Cyclone Ride Gets Shut Down Due To Damage

By Idy Perl
The Cyclone is an iconic roller coaster that has been operating in Coney Island for over a century, but it has now been shut down by the DOB for the unforeseeable future.
This announcement comes after the ride got stuck last week Thursday and riders had to be escorted down the tracks. The DOB examined the roller coaster on Friday to pinpoint the problem, and was told by Luna Park, which operates the Cyclone, that the problem was a crack in the machinery in the roller coaster’s motor room.
The DOB issued two violations to the park: one for failing to properly maintain the ride, and another for failing to report the damage to the DOB right away.
The city will now keep the ride closed until its completely repaired and safe for passengers again.
