Con Ed Customers Still without Power Should Expect to Have It Back By Today

After Tropical Storm Isaias hit New York, tens of thousands of Con Edison customers were left without power. President of the Company, Tim Cawley, said 98 percent of outages were taken care of over the past week, the other two percent took until today.

Cawley said all New York City damages would be restored by Monday morning and in Westchester County by Monday Evening, with few repaired into Tuesday.

He said the problem lies in exposed wires, but that burying them is not an option because it would cost too much. However, Con Ed is spending about $3 billion a year to better prepare the city for storms.

“It would cost about $50 billion with a ‘B’ to underground our entire system. So, while we could do that, there’s a balance between cost and the reliability we’d be seeking,” Cawley said.
