Composting Now Mandatory In All Boroughs

By Idy Perl
Up until this week composting was mandatory only in Brooklyn and Queens, but as of October 6th it is mandatory throughout the five boroughs.
As of October 6th all residents are required to separate compost from their regular garbage. Compost includes yard waste, food scraps, and food-soiled paper. These materials are all able to be turned into renewable energy or compost that’s given to farmers.
The sanitation department announced that all compost should go in a bin of up to 55 gallons with a secure lid. Compost is collected on the same day as recycling.
This is just one of the changes Mayor Adams is initiating to address the trash issue in NYC, in addition to the new regulations regarding trash cans which will go into effect in November.
