City to Honor Black Lives Matter Movement
Mayor Bill de Blasio today announced that the city will paint and re-name one street in each borough of New York City in honor of the Black Lives Matter movement. This move mirrors his fellow mayor from Washington DC - Muriel Bowser - who painted the words Black Lives Matter on 16th street NW which leads to the White House. DC Mayor Bowser also named the street “Black Lives Matter Plaza.” As New York City has experienced protests and rioting in response to the murder of George Floyd by a police office in Minneapolis, Mayor de Blasio is pushing this painting and re-naming because “It’s time to do something officially representing this city to represent the fundamental power of Black Lives Matter."
