City Council Speaker Corey Johnson Decides Against Running for Mayor

After years of toying with the public, City Council Speaker Corey Johnson announced Thursday that he would not be running for New York City Mayor.

He wrote in a statement that running for Mayor isn't in his best interest during these trying times.

"Just as I was open about the fact that I was considering a run for Mayor, I now want to be open about the fact that I have made the difficult decision not to run. This challenging time has led me to rethink how I can best be of service to this city, and I have come to the conclusion that this is not the right path for me," Johnson tweeted.

He went on to discuss dealing with personal mental health issues over the past several months.

Candidates expected to face off for Mayor in the 2021 election include City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, the Mayor's former top lawyer Maya Wiley, and former Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, among some others.
