Boro Parkers Share Frightening Subway Knife Incident On New Year’s Eve

By Y.M. Lowy

On New Year’s Eve, a group of Boro Park locals experienced a terrifying moment while traveling on a D train headed to Times Square. The unsettling incident occurred as their subway car filled with passengers headed to the city.

The group had been joined by four Israeli women and three Israeli men at one stop, chatting and enjoying the ride, looking forward to the New Year’s Eve experience in the Square. However, at the 36th Street station a woman entered the car holding a long, ridged knife with a wooden handle.

The woman began waving the knife around and performing tricks in an extremely dangerous and alarming manner, causing panic among the passengers. One of the Israeli women was so frightened she started crying, worried it might be a terrorist attack as she witnessed already in Israel.

In response to the passengers' visible distress, the woman tucked the knife into her coat pocket, but its length caused it to stick out visibly. She then moved further down the train car, but instead of diffusing the tension, she sat down, took the knife back out, and casually placed it on her lap, as if nothing was wrong and freighting.

This terrifying incident adds to a growing list of alarming events in New York City’s subway system, where passengers have increasingly voiced safety concerns. Just yesterday, two disturbing videos went viral. One showed a person being shoved onto the tracks moments before a train arrived, the victim critically injured. Another clip showed a Jewish woman walking with her child in the subway while being harassed with loud, hateful anti-Semitic shouts.

This morning, on the first day of the new year, two people were stabbed in separate incidents on the subway. Sadly, the subway is no longer the peaceful ride it once was - for commuting to work, dining out, visiting doctors, or shopping in the city. People now think twice, or even three times, before deciding to take the train.

“We’ve read the news in recent days, weeks, and months about the terrifying situation on our subways,” said one of the Boro Park residents involved in the incident. “But nothing compares to witnessing the danger firsthand - being in a closed train car with an unsettled woman waving a huge knife, creating terrifying moments for all of us who just wanted to have a good night in the city.”
