Boro Park’s District Leader David Schwartz, Elected as First Vice Chair of the Brooklyn Democratic County Committee

David Schwartz, who is the District Leader of the 48th Assembly District, last night was elected to serve as the First Vice Chair to the Brooklyn Democratic County Committee, one of the largest Democratic committees in the country.

Schwartz, who when he was elected in 2016 at age 22, was Brooklyn’s youngest District Leader, said that what motivated him to run was that he “saw politics as an opportunity to be a voice for younger people, get more people involved, and to build coalitions within the Brooklyn, which is so diverse.”

Now a married father of two, who lives in Boro Park, Schwartz said that he attended yeshiva in Williamsburg, where he “was taught the importance of civic engagement, helping your community and helping others.”

“I realized politics and public service is a major avenue to help others, which is the goal of my life,” said Schwartz, whose first job was to serve as a communications assistant for Assemblyman Dov Hikind.

After representing Boro Park and Midwood for four years, Schwartz said that he sought the position of first vice chair of the Brooklyn Democratic County Committee because he wants “to build coalitions for the greater good,” he said at a Zoom committee meeting. “I am so proud to see the diverse group of officers running, which is exactly what Brooklyn represents, and I believe we will be able to accomplish great things together.”

One way that Schwartz has shown that he can and does, in fact, make productive and positive connections among different groups of people was in August of 2019, when he helped to secure the votes that Judge Shlomo Mostofsky needed win the endorsement of the Kings County Democratic Executive Committee, which effectively secured his nomination for New York State Supreme Court justice.

How did Schwartz lead this effort to amass the necessary votes for Judge Mostofsky?

“Together with others, we built a coalition with a diverse group of district leaders,” explained Schwartz. “Getting things done comes down to coalition-building. I want to build bridges.”

Other accomplishments of Schwartz have been providing strong push-back to any anti-Semitic voices that have arisen in the committee meetings and also speaking out for other Jewish elected officials.

The Brooklyn Country Committee, which consists of thousands of members, with each group representing their small areas and different ideologies, is lucky to have Schwartz, who brings a balance to the Democratic party that has a group of far-left “reformers,” who are in constant battles with the more moderate voices at the committee meetings.

In fact, just last night, at the same Zoom meeting at which Schwartz was elected First Vice Chair to the Brooklyn Democratic County Committee, he proved to remain a successfully moderate voice after more than 100 county committee members left the meeting in a protest that claimed that the party’s establishment was in different ways blocking many progressive reforms.

“It's my honor to serve as the first vice chair of this grassroots and important committee, to assure that everybody is heard and represented, and make sure that the committee's affairs runs efficiently and smoothly,” Schwartz said today. “I strive to be a voice for our community at the table where important decisions are made.”

Today on Twitter, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein joined a chorus of community members who offered their good wishes to Schwartz today.

“As a member of Borough Park’s Chassidic community, you bring a unique perspective and set of skills to this position,” Eichenstein wrote. “I know you will make us proud.”
