Biden Chooses Boro Park Woman to Serve as Dep. National Security Adviser for Cybersecurity

By Yehudit Garmaise

Anne “Chani” Neuberger, a frum Jew, who not only grew up speaking Yiddish at home in Boro Park, but who has been working as an intelligence official for the National Security Agency (NSA) since 2010, has just been chosen by President-elect Joe Biden to serve as the deputy national security adviser for cybersecurity for his incoming National Security Council.

Mrs. Neuberger, who served as the NSA’s director of cybersecurity since 2019, managed the intelligence shared, between the NSA and other government agencies, as well as the private sector, about national threats.

In her new position, Mrs. Neuberger will put her experiences and expertise to good use when she is responsible for coordinating the federal government’s cybersecurity efforts.

After attending Touro College, Mrs. Neuberger, whose grandparents are Holocaust survivors and whose parents were on the passengers on the Air France flight in 1976 that was hijacked to Entebbe, earned a Master of Business Administration from Columbia University, before joining the federal government as a White House Fellow, and then serving as the deputy chief management officer of the Navy.

By hiring Mrs. Neuberger, President-elect Biden is indicating that he intends to reprioritize cybersecurity as a key national security concern two years after President Donald Trump eliminated the role of cybersecurity coordinator.

A Congressional staffer described Mrs. Neuberger’s promotion as “a big loss” for the NSA but emphasized that her experience is “needed now more than ever at the highest levels of government, especially in light of recent events and the shifting cyber threat landscape.

“It’s also such a welcome development to see a woman leading in such a critical national security issue, especially given the dearth of women in senior national security roles.”
