Beware of the Staged Car Crash Scam

Staged car crashes are on the rise in New York, and officials are urging drivers to stay vigilant. Scammers are intentionally causing accidents to collect insurance payouts, and it’s costing drivers auto insurance premiums have jumped by as much as $300 a year.

In 2023, New York saw nearly 1,800 staged crashes, a 14% increase from the previous year.

The DMV says defensive driving is your best defense. Experts recommend staying alert, avoiding tailgating, and always expecting sudden moves from other drivers. If you suspect you’ve been caught in a staged crash, document everything by taking photos, and report it to both the police and your insurance company.
