YS Gold

We regret to inform you of the passing of Reb Shloime Yechiel Mechel Steinmetz, z”l, a true vestige of the Oberlander tradition of ehrlichkeit and temimus who resided in Boro Park for many decades. He was 95 years of age.

The niftar was born in Budapest to Reb Asher Zelig who ran the chevra shas in Budapest. His grandfather, R’ Avrum Steinmetz, came from Marmorosh and settled in Budapest.

Miraculously, Reb Shloime, his parents, and his grandfather all survived the war, settling in Williamsburg and later in Boro Park.

He married Chana Felsenberg, a descendant of the Chasam Sofer, and together they built an illustrious Torah home.

On his first Shabbos in Williamsburg, he joined the Viener kehillah. He asked the balebatim who would deliver a shiur the next day and was told that if he would deliver a shiur there will be one. He started a chevra Shas-just like his father had done back home— and ran it for sixty years, the majority of them in Boro Park, and it remains active to this day.

Reb Shloime was known for his ehrlichkeit and his mesirus nefesh for kviyas ittim l’Torah, waking up every morning at 5 in the morning to begin his day with learning.

He leaves behind generations of Torah-true descendants and a legacy of ehrlichkeit and adherence to Torah and Yiddishkeit.

The levaya will take place this afternoon in the Beth Israel cemetery.

Yehi zichro baruch.
