YS GOLD
We regret to inform you of the passing of Reb Binyomin
Eliezer Herbst, a longtime Boro Park resident, a beloved and admired individual
whose home was open to all. He was 77 years of age.
Reb Binyomin was born to Reb Moshe Shulem and ybl”ch,
Yachtchu Herbst in Hajdunanas, Hungary. The family came to Canada when Yumi was
seven, and when he got older he enrolled in the Bobover Yeshiva, and he later
learned in Satmar, where he became close to the Divrei Yoel of Satmar.
He and, tbl”ch his wife, established their home in Boro
Park, where he would remain for the rest of his life, and where he would live
his life of chessed for close to fifty years.
His open home on 17th Avenue was known far and wide as a
place where people can come and get a warm meal or help with their
problems. Reb Binyumin also maintained a
large home and shul in upstate Woodbourne, that was a place of refuge for
people seeking a warm place to catch a weekday or Shabbos meal or enjoy a kumzitz. Many prominent heimishe singers
started their careers by conducting kumzitzes at the Woodbourne property,
affectionately referred to as “Hoidunanash”, after the city in which Reb
Binyamin was born.
In his early years in Boro Park, Reb Binyumin was a
prominent mispallel of Munkatch shul and later, when the Zibo shul
opened up on 52nd Street in Boro Park he became its longtime Rosh Hakahal and
he became very close to the Zibo Rav zt”l, and yblc”t his son the current Zibo
Rav shlit”a.
Reb Binyumin leaves behind his mother tichye, his wife
tichye, and a beautiful generation of children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren Bnei Torah living in Boro Park, Lakewood and Monsey.
The levaya will take place this morning at 11:00 at the
Dzibo shul, 1610 52nd Street.
Yehi zichro Baruch.
