It is with sadness we report the passing of R Mordche Shmiel Yonason Berkowitz u"h who passed away tonight at the age of 75. 

The nifter was a tremendous Talmid Chachom and wrote many torah articles in publications throughout the years. He was a partner in the Korns Bakery. He was also one of the longest residents of Seagate, where he served as shamish in Rabbi Rubin's Shul for many years, even before the Rav's time. As one of the Shul's founders, he made the shul's business his own business and took personal responsibility to support the shul however and whenever needed. 

As an ish chesed involved in nearly every aspect of the Seagate community, nearly every person he met in the street recognized and greeted him, either because he had personally done them a favor or because they knew someone he had done a favor for. 

Seagate residents recall how he made it his mission to drop off enough bilkes for shalosh suedoes not just in his shul but in all the shuls in Seagate every single week. Additionally, every Friday, he would stop off at the police station to deliver a cake. 

The nifter was known to have an open house where guests were always welcome, especially those from Eretz Yisroel and meshulachim, who remember him as someone who could be counted on to give a generous donation.
