BDE: Mrs. Zissel Katz, A"H
We are saddened to inform the community of the petira of Mrs. Zissel Katz, a”h, who was 91 years old.
Mrs. Katz, a longtime Boro Park residen,t who was born in Kashoi, Czechoslovakia, in 1929, was married to Reb Meir Katz, with whom she had four children, all of whom live in Boro Park. She has many, many, many grandchildren, ka”H, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, said Mrs. Katz’s grandson, Mr. Shloimy Katz.
The daughter of Mr. Shrage Tzvi Schwartz, a”h, and Mrs. Mirel Schwartz, a”h, Mrs. Katz was the only one from her large family, when she was only a teenager, to survive Auschwitz.
The story Mr. Katz most remembers his grandmother telling about the Holocaust, about which she spoke often, was that many times, because they were so weak from hunger and exhaustion, Yidden who allowed themselves to fall asleep sometimes did not later wake up. Therefore, one night when Mrs. Katz could not keep her eyes open, she vividly remembered a kind woman who once saved her life by telling her to use her fingers to hold her eyes open, so that she would not fall asleep.
“She remembered this story with gratitude,” said Mr. Shloimy Katz, who said his grandmother remembered everything about the Holocaust, and was proud to be zocheh to have great great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Katz’s levaya will take place at 8:15pm at Shomrei Hadas, which is located at 3803 14th Ave., and her kvura will take place in the Floral Park Cemetery in South Brunswick Township, NJ.
