We are saddened to inform you of the passing of Mrs. Mayer, a matriarch to a family of talmidei chachomim and marbitzei Torah, a Holocaust survivor who rebuilt with tenacity, and with a desire to see an ehrliche dor in her children. She was 99 years of age.
She was born in a town in Hungary to Yosef and Devorah Klein. When the war broke out, she escaped to an aunt in Kashau, and from there she was deported to Auschwitz later on. From her entire city, no one remained.
Alone in the world, and already in her mid-20’s, she sought a husband with whom to build a Torah home—which was like finding a needle in a haystack. Finally, she was pointed in the direction of a widower, Reb Avrum Mayer, who had lost a wife and three children.
They married, and moved to Crown Heights, where Reb Avrum owned a grocery store, while his wife oversaw the home, and knitted on the side for some extra income.
Her entire endeavor was to see children who were ehrlich, and who would become talmidei chachomim. Her home was built on a foundation of mesirus nefesh, and this is how she lived her entire life; with a singular focus on raising Torah’dige generations.
Her children are all accomplished talmidei Chachomim and mechanchim, her son is Rav Yosef Mayer, Rosh Yeshiva of Me’or haTorah, and her daughter is Mrs. Katz , a longtime mechaneches in Tomer Devorah.
The levaya will take place at the Satmar Beis Medrash on 53rd Street, where the Mayer’s davened for many years.
Yehi zichra baruch.
