BDE: Mrs. Gittel Rivka Schwartz, a”h, Auschwitz survivor

We are saddened to inform you of the passing of Mrs. Schwartz. She was 96 years of age.

She was born in Hungary to her parents,  Reb Yida Leibish and Roiza Langer. They, and their extended family, would perish at the hands of the Nazis, ym”sh.

Following the war, she married her husband R’ Yitzchok Eizik Schwartz, a fellow survivor. They established a beautiful Torah home. They never spoke about their experiences during the war, they were always joyful.

The Schwartz’s were longtime mispallelim at the Haleiner Shul on 50th street near Fort Hamilton Parkway, where Reb Yitzchok Eizik was known as a talmid Chochom, a chashuve Yid, and Mrs. Schwartz as a regal woman, blessed with many middos tovos.

A rarity during those earlier years, Mrs. Schwartz worked outside the home, taking on the breadwinning duties, so that her husband could sit and learn. This went on for decades, until his passing about 25 years ago.

Upon her passing earlier this week, she goes up to reap the rewards of her sacrifices for Torah, and to be reunited with the neshamos of those who have been so brutally taken from her so many years ago.

Yehi Zichra Baruch.
