BDE: Dr. Marvin Schick z”l

Boro Park – We are saddened to inform of the petira of Dr. Marvin Schick, a legendary askan, shaliach of gedolei Yisroel and fierce defender of the Torah community for the better part of a century, who suffered a heart attack Thursday night. He was 85.

It is hard to underestimate the impact Dr. Schick, who name was Meir, had on American Orthodoxy. He was first initiated into the world of askanus by Rav Aharon Kotler, served as president of Yeshiva Rabbeinu Yaakov Yosef and served in the administration of New York Mayor John Lindsay in the 1970s.

Dr. Schick was born in 1934 to Rabbi Joseph and Rebbetzin Renee Schick, 15 minutes and a full day before his twin brother, Allen. He was orphaned from his father by the age of four. To support the family, his mother opened Schick’s bakery on 16th Ave. and 47th Street

Dr. Schick eventually served as political science and constitutional law professor at Hunter College and was considered an expert in Jewish education. His son Avi is an attorney who represents the yeshivos in their battle for independence in New York state.

Dr. Schick, along with Rabbi Moshe Sherer of Agudath Israel, established the National Jewish Commission on Law and Public Affairs, or COLPA, in 1965 to help religious Jews who encounter workplace harassment.

Yehi zichro boruch.
