Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein And Councilman Kalman Yeger To Governor Cuomo: Enough Is Enough. Re-open New York Now

Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein and Councilman Kalman Yeger today sent a letter (attached) to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo on behalf of their constituents and all New Yorkers, urging the immediate and unrestricted reopening of the State of New York.

Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein represents the 48th Assembly District which includes Borough Park and Midwood in the New York State Assembly.

Councilman Kalman Yeger represents the 44th Council District which includes Borough Park, Midwood, Bensonhurst, Gravesend and Kensington in the New York City Council. Dear Governor Cuomo:

We write to urge you to immediately reopen our great State of New York.

Three months of difficult lockdown was always inconceivable for a state of twenty million strong. But we did it, at immeasurable cost. After nearly three months in a state of emergency, New York’s rate of COVID-19 infection is at its lowest since the outbreak began. As you said on Monday, we have made phenomenal progress.

In the meantime, our small businesses are shuttered. Unemployment is at record highs, while still unknown is how many lost jobs will be recoverable in the short term, if at all. Our children’s skills and knowledge are regressing at unknowable rates. Unrest is growing at exponential levels. Withering before our eyes is the pulse that once made New York great.

As we overcome one crisis, we now find ourselves immersed in another. The tragic death of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis has plunged us into a nation-wide protest and vigil. Protestors are gathering, perhaps well-meaning, but surely with little regard for social-distancing standards. It has also unfortunately brought out rioters who are destroying what is left of our economy, eviscerating the life’s work of our fellow New Yorkers. The lockdown may not have formally ended, but the calls for mass peaceful marching without any regard for social-distancing have rendered a continued lockdown at this point ludicrous.

Furthermore, most small business owners get it. They are aware of the need to be safe, even while going about their business.

Governor, it is now time to reopen New York. It is time to bring us back to as normal as we can achieve. You must allow our small businesses to rebuild, to the extent still possible; our children to resume their growth and education; our society to flourish once again. New Yorkers are unemployed, broke, anxious and emotionally drained. We need an infusion of hope, a burst of energy, a restoration of normalcy. Our neighbors need their lives back fully and completely. We need to heal.

The only way for any of this to happen is to allow for an unmitigated reopening. Now is the time to revitalize and restore New York’s greatness; to restart the economic engine that once fueled the nation.

It is not too late to once again take pride in New York. All you need do is allow our businesses to turn the “closed” sign to “open.” And to do so immediately.

Governor, please don’t aband
