After 40 Years: The Subway Map Gets a Makeover

By Y.M. Lowy
For the first time in over 40 years, New York City’s subway map is getting fully redesigned. The MTA announced the change promising a clearer layout that makes navigating the system less of a puzzle.
The new map brings back thick, bold lines reminiscent of the 1970s version. That map, while visually striking, was scrapped in 1979 for being too confusing.
Though the redesign is being rolled out across subway cars and stations in the coming weeks, it’s not entirely new. Since 2021, the MTA has tested the updated style on digital screens and online. Now, it’s going systemwide.
The old map isn’t disappearing entirely. The MTA will keep it available online, offering a familiar option for those who prefer the classic design.
