Adopt-a-Catch Basin: Keeping Storm Drains Clear

By Y.M. Lowy
After a heavy rain, it’s not unusual to see water pooling at corners or running down the street like a mini river. Storms can hit hard, and when drains get blocked, flooding follows.
New York City has over 150,000 catch basins. These are the storm drains at the edge of the street that carry rainwater away. When they get clogged with leaves or garbage, streets can flood.
To help prevent that, the Department of Environmental Protection started a program called Adopt-a-Catch Basin. It asks New Yorkers to take care of the drains near their homes. Volunteers watch the drains, especially before or during storms. If they see leaves or trash covering it, they clear it.
Volunteers get a free kit with gloves, a rake, and a reflective vest. The city still sends trucks to clean the inside of the drains, but a quick cleanup can help prevent flooding.
