A well visit can actually save your life.

A well visit can actually save your life.

You’re busy. You’re really, really busy. But are you too busy for your future? In today's fast-paced world, prioritizing your health can often take a backseat. However, being proactive about your well-being is not just a choice. It’s an utter necessity because although life runs fast,  illness sadly sprints faster.

Ever since Makdim was founded, we’ve made every effort to raise awareness about periodic health checkups within the community. Baruch Hashem, our efforts are paying off. More and more adults within our community are heading to the doctor to get in touch with their health. Have you joined the movement?

Our message is simple: Go for your well visit. Know what’s going on inside your body so you can continue to live worry-free. Parents, advise your chasanim and kallahs to get a physical checkup before they get married and to continue visiting their general practitioner for routine checkups. And vice versa, children, urge your parents to go for their annual. Being proactive makes all the difference, and it all begins with periodic visits to your primary care doctor.

The reason these well visits are such an essential aspect of health care is because, over time,  you get to build a relationship with the doctor. They get to know the details about your health, and the ins and outs of your wellbeing.

Once you have a relationship established, your doctor will be able to spot the signs of illness. They will note important milestones and changes and send you to the right specialists. That could mean sending you to the cardiologist if they detect heart issues or an endocrinologist if they suspect early stages of diabetes. For women, this includes mammograms for breast cancer screening, which your doctor will remind you to do typically starting at age 40 (or earlier if there's a family history).

From the start, Makdim has placed a strong emphasis on screening for colon cancer. It’s a disease that grows steadily, out of sight, over the course of a long time. Early detection means catching it before it turns fatal. Ever since we began our colon cancer awareness campaigns, hundreds of adults within our community have gone to get tested, and Baruch Hashem, many have been able to stop the disease in its tracks. Screening should begin at the age of 45, and your doctor will guide you on scheduling tests for subsequent years.
