$48 Million in Stolen EBT Benefits Recovered for NYC Families, but Reimbursement Program Ends

Nearly $48 million in stolen SNAP and Cash Assistance benefits have been restored to 95,000 families across New York City. These funds, critical for low-income households relying on EBT cards for food and essentials, were stolen using skimming devices that thieves placed on card readers to copy card information.
“This is just another way we are making our city more affordable and the best place to raise a family,” said Mayor Eric Adams. “We are proud to have connected nearly 95,000 vulnerable families with replacement money for food and daily necessities that were cruelly stolen from them.”
However, the reimbursement program has now ended. Going forward, families who lose benefits to theft will not receive refunds. Officials advise regularly changing PINs and freezing cards when not in use to protect these vital resources.
