9 May 2018 11:43 AM

Governor Cuomo signed an official proclamation that marks this week as New York’s first Maternal Health Awareness Week!Welcoming a new baby is a cause for joy, the proclamation says, yet there are serious issues that need to be addressed about a mom’s health before, during and after giving birth.
Some steps that have been previously taken to improve women’s health care is a government requirement that all health insurance policies include coverage for maternal depression screening, and establish a new Maternal Mortality Review Board to review each death to improve care and reduce mortalities.
The proclamation continues that compared to other developed countries, the United States has among the poorest outcomes for moms. New York ranked 30th in the nation, despite steps taken to reduce maternal mortality rates.
The mayor officially proclaimed May 6-11,2018 as Maternal Health Awareness Week.
