Expanded Red Light Camera Program Goes Into Effect Today

11 Jul 2019 11:28 AM

New York City is taking steps to increase safety measures with regards to speeding. A newly expanded speed camera law takes effect today throughout the city.

The stats pushed this law to be approved, to have thousands of cameras installed with longer hours of enforcement, even beyond school hours.

The expanded hours of enforcement expanded to Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, all year round.

Approximately 40 cameras will be installed per month, until the end of the year, to reach the citywide increase in speed camera installations.

Cameras will ticket offenders going 36 miles per hour or higher, which is 11 miles over the speed limit. The fine starts at $50.

City statistics show that 80% of drivers issued speeding tickets are careful enough not to get another one. Mayor Bill de Blasio uses this reasoning to ensure the public that the city is not doing this for the money, rather for the safety. Last year, the city collected $45 million from the speed camera program.
