De Blasio’s Favorite Bagel: ‘Whole Wheat. Toasted. Extra Cream Cheese’

New York – Today being National Bagel Day, what is your favorite bagel?

For Mayor Bill de Blasio, who eats his pizza with a knife and fork, it’s the Bagel Hole in Park Slope which makes the best of the Jewish culinary delights. And he likes them toasted, he tweeted.
But Bagel Hole doesn’t toast their bagels, a manager for the shop told the New York Post. “We bake them here and they’re already hot,” Raul Perez said. “It’s the old-fashioned way.”

De Blasio descended into the second gastronomic scandal of his seven-year-old administration on Wednesday in honor of the humble bagel.

“New York City has the best bagels in the world. But our BEST bagel? Bagel Hole in Park Slope. No contest,” the mayor tweeted. “Don’t get there as much as I used to, but it was our go-to when the kids needed a bite before Little League. Whole wheat. Toasted. Extra cream cheese.”
But real New Yorkers bite into pizza and real New Yorkers never toast their bagels.

“In the 20 years I lived across the street from EssABagel,” one user tweeted, “they never had a toaster and would scoff if you asked. The best bagels on earth don’t need no toastin’.”
The mayor quickly deleted the provocative tweet, reposting it without the word “toasted.”
“What can I say,” he responded to one critic, “I must have a hole in my memory.”
